Growing More Than Vegetables: The Heart Behind the Victory Garden

“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” — Helen Keller

This quote perfectly captures the spirit of the Victory Garden located behind Maryboro Lodge, where volunteers and members of the Fenelon Falls Horticultural Society recently gathered to plant another season of hope, generosity, and community.

While rows of tomatoes, beans, squash, lettuce, and other vegetables are taking root in the soil, the Victory Garden grows something far greater than food. It cultivates compassion, connection, and a shared commitment to helping our neighbours.

Each year, dedicated volunteers generously donate their time, energy, and expertise to ensure the garden flourishes. From planning and planting to watering, weeding, harvesting, and maintaining the garden throughout the growing season, countless hours are invested by individuals who believe that no family in our community should go without access to fresh, healthy food.

The harvest from the Victory Garden is donated to the local food bank, helping provide nutritious produce to families and individuals facing food insecurity. Every tomato picked, every bean harvested, and every basket of vegetables delivered represents the caring hands and generous hearts of those who make this project possible.

The Fenelon Falls Horticultural Society is proud to support an initiative that demonstrates the power of gardening as a force for good. Gardening teaches us patience, stewardship, and respect for the natural world, but the Victory Garden reminds us that it can also be a meaningful way to give back to our community.

The efforts of our volunteers do not go unnoticed. Whether spending an hour pulling weeds, tending young seedlings, or harvesting produce on a warm summer evening, every contribution matters. Together, these small acts create a lasting impact for local families who rely on the support of the food bank.

As the garden begins another growing season, we invite community members to consider joining our gardening team. No experience is necessary—just a willingness to lend a hand and be part of something meaningful. Whether you’re an experienced gardener or simply looking for a way to give back, there is a place for you in the Victory Garden.

In a world where many challenges can feel overwhelming, the Victory Garden offers a simple but powerful reminder: when a community comes together with a common purpose, remarkable things can grow.

We extend our sincere thanks to every volunteer and member who helped plant this year’s garden and to those who will continue to care for it in the months ahead. Your dedication is helping nourish not only the soil but also the lives of families throughout our community.

Together, we are growing food, growing hope, and growing a stronger Fenelon Falls.
